What Are Some Lesser Known Facts About Tech Companies?

Microsoft was founded in New Mexico
Though Microsoft is currently headquartered in and has become essentially synonymous with Redmond, Washington, the company was actually founded in New Mexico back in April 1975. It wouldn't be until 1986 that the company moved to Redmond.

2)The Windows XP background may be the most viewed photo in history

"Bliss," the photo itself was taken in Sonoma County, California, by Charles O'Rear. Taken in 1996, Microsoft paid O'Rear a pretty penny for the rights to the photo, ultimately making it the default background in Windows XP. It's since been suggested that "Bliss" may very well be the most viewed photo in the history of the world. Not only did Microsoft have a commanding 90%-plus share of the desktop market at the time of XP's release, but XP remained in use by a majority of Windows users for years on end.

3)Brian Eno Composed "The Microsoft Sound"
Pioneering musician Brian Eno was the musical brains behind Window 95's start up tune, dubbed "The Microsoft Sound."

4)Those who work at Microsoft, at least those who have been there for many years, view themselves as 'softies.'

5)It's spelled Microsoft but way, way back, when co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen were forming what would become the world's most well known OS and software company, the name was Micro-Soft.

    hp
    (Hewlett-Packard)

There is an interesting story hidden behind the company's name.
    The company was founded by
William "Bill" Redington Hewlett and Dave Packard.
When the company was started by these two friends, a lot of argument took place for deciding the name of the company. Hewlett wanted it to be named ashp while packard wanted its name to be ph.
Finally they decided to toss a coin and decide. Packard won the toss, but he chose to keep it hp and thus the name hp came into existence.
    A true example of friendship.

    Apple

When Jobs and Wozniak started Apple, Wozniak was working at hp. Wozniak was loyal and he was of the opinion that hp had a right to use his model. He presented the model before them but they did not like it and his model was rejected. Thus Apple used it and became a successful company in future.

    Google was a mistake!
No, not the company, but it's name. Believe it or not but the world's biggest company today had got it's name due to a spelling mistake.
In September, 1997 , Co-founders of Google (then called Backrub), Larry Page and Sergey Brin were trying to think up a good name - something that related to the indexing of an immense amount of data. Sean verbally suggested the word "googolplex," and Larry responded verbally with the shortened form, "Googol" (both words refer to specific large numbers). Sean who was closer to a Computer terminal, searched whether the name is available for registration or not. But while doing so, he misspelled the word Googol as Google and it was found available. Larry liked the name and thus we got the name for the biggest thing on Internet today.
